Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to give students an insight into the history of the House of Liechtenstein with the help of auxiliary historical sciences (AHS). The seminar will focus on selected auxiliary historical sciences and their practical application to specific examples in the history of the House of Liechtenstein. In addition to materials of a diplomatic nature (charters, urbariums, vital records), attention will be paid to sphragistics, heraldry, phaleristics, numismatics, genealogy, epigraphy, (inscriptional) palaeography and chronology. The course might also include a one-day excursion (the castles in Lednice and Valtice or the church and crypt in Vranov u Brna).
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
- be well informed about the basic time points in the history of the House of Liechtenstein
- apply the knowledge of AHS to specific historical sources related to the House of Liechtenstein
- mention the main publications and databases that relate to the history of the House of Liechtenstein with reference to AHS.
Syllabus
  • 1. A brief history of the family from the beginning to the 20th century. The current state of research.
  • 2. Sphragistics I – Basic features of the development of Liechtenstein sphragistics from the 13th to the 18th century
  • 3. Sphragistics II – The development of scripts on Liechtenstein seals (inscriptional palaeography)
  • 4. Heraldry and phaleristics – Changes in the Liechtenstein coat of arms on selected monuments
  • 5. Numismatics – Coinage of the House of Liechtenstein
  • 6. Diplomatics I – Important family treaties (reading, analysis, dating)
  • 7. Diplomatics II – Imperial and royal documents relating to the history of the family (reading, analysis, dating)
  • 8. Diplomatics III – Analysis of the Liechtenstein urbars
  • 9. Diplomatics IV – Reading and dating of letters: the fate of Perchta of Rožmberk and her correspondence with her father Oldřich II of Rožmberk and her siblings
  • 10. Genealogy – Marriage policy, genealogical trees, reading from vital records
  • 11. Epigraphy – Liechtenstein tombstones, working with chronograms
  • 12. Administration of the dominion and estates of the Princes of Liechtenstein in the Czech lands
  • 13. Interpretation of selected Liechtenstein monuments.

Teaching methods
Lecture, work with extracts, excursion. All materials will be available in the IS.
Assessment methods
For credit to be awarded: active attendance in the seminars (75%), execution of assignments and passing a two-part written test: (a) theoretical questions on selected AHS and on the history of the House of Liechtenstein (b) a test of skills from the seminar
