Course objectives
The aim of this course is to provide geographic and cultural information about Greek regions during Middle Ages, i.e. duration of the Byzantine Empire. Students will gain knowledge concerning administrative and ecclesiastic units of the medieval Byzantium. The emphasis will be given to those administrative and ecclesiastic units which are now part of modern Greek state. Within the frame of this course the students will also obtain information about main urban centers and/or archictectural monuments from Byzantine era surviving until our times.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student:
- will be able to identify and desribe main geographical areas of today Greece and also their local history in general;
- will have knowledge about main centers of specific regions, and also their most important historical landmarks, objects and monuments from the Byzantine era;
- will be able to apply the acquired knowledge also outside the academic soil in everyday life (e. g. while guiding tourists in Greece etc.).

  • • Hellas and Thessaly.
  • • Peloponnesus.
