- Course objectives
- The course provides students with normative grammar of the Attic Greek dialect of the Classical period. The focus is placed on practice of grammatical phenomena, particularly morphological, existing in Modern Greek. The aim of the course is to present the old phase of Greek language to students and thus contribute to their better understanding of the development of Modern Greek language.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course the student:
will know and understand the development of particular morphological categories;
will understand major fonetic changes;
able to understand older (17th-19th centuries) Greek texts;
understand the forms that exist in professional and specialized styles;
have a basic overview of the complex development of Greek. - Syllabus
- 1. Participles. 2. Contracted verbs. 3. Vowel and s-stems of the 3rd declension. 4. Pronouns. 5. Subjunctive. 6. Optative. 7. Perfect tense. 8. Second passive aorist. 9. μι-verbs. 10. Introduction into syntax.

- Teaching methods
- Lectures, practice (grammar exercises, simple translations), drill. An e-learning course with study materials (comparative tables of grammatical phenomena) and grammar practice tests is available.
- Assessment methods
- Credits are obtained by passing a written test at the end of the period. The test consists of a translation of simple sentences from Greek into Czech, identifying verb forms exercise and a translation of verb forms.
