Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide a comprehensive and systematic overview of the contemporary Russian vocabulary as the central component of language system. During the lectures the students will get acquainted with theoretical questions of the contemporary Russian vocabulary science in comparison to the Russian–Czech plan. The learners will get a complete structured idea of Russian lexical system, significant word structure as well as semantical and other paradigmatic relations, of vocabulary levels of contemporary Russian in light of words origins and their stylistic functions. The students will gain an overview of Russian phraseology, idiomatic, will get acquainted with ways of word forming in Russian, will get advices about types of language dictionaries and effective work with lexicographical sources.
In the seminars, conceived as lexicological exercises, the students will learn how to use gained theoretical knowledge on a concrete lingual material.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student will be able:
- to be looking at the Russian vocabulary as the structures dynamic system; that will help him to acquire the vocabulary of the foreign language with understanding deeper semantical, structural and functional connections;
- to evaluate and to practically apply the appropriateness of the choice of the variable lexical units in oral and written speech from the origins, meaning, function and stylistic applicability point of view;
- to knowledgeably and effectively find and use the lexicographical sources and manuals while deeper acquiring the Russian vocabulary and while translating the texts from the foreign language into the mother tongue and vice versa.

  • 1. General typological characteristics of Russian vocabulary in comparison to the Czech vocabulary.
  • 2. Russian vocabulary in light of origin (vernaculars and loanwords).
  • 3. Russian vocabulary in light of use (active and passive vocabulary: archaisms, historicisms, neologisms).
  • 4. Russian vocabulary in light of stylistics (territorial and social dialecticisms).
  • 5. Russian vocabulary in light of stylistics (functional, emotional and expressive aspect).
  • 6. Polysemy in Russian vocabulary.
  • 7. Homonymy and paronymy in Russian.
  • 8. Synonymy and relative phenomena (periphrases, euphemism, lingual taboos).
  • 9. Antonymy in Russian vocabulary.
  • 10. Onomastic, Russian proper nouns.
  • 11. Russian phraseology and study of idiom.
  • 12. Word-forming in Russian. Productive models of word formation.
  • 13. Practical lexicography: types of printed and electronic dictionaries, macro- and microstructure of dictionaries, working with dictionaries.
