Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce to students the basic theories of audiovisual translation (terminology, methods, tools etc.), to teach to apply theoretical knowledge of translatology, linguistics for audiovisual translation, to critically analyze particular translations and to create their own audiovisual translation.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able:
- to operate with the basic theory and practice audiovisual translation;
- to use in practice the information about the theory of translatology, linguistics and audiovisual translation;
- to work with chosen subtitling programs and to have a notion about further related software;
- to process own audiovisual translation and to analyze the particular translations for understanding certain rules of this kind of translation.
Syllabus
  • The history of audiovisual translation in the 20th and 21st centuries. Subtitling and dubbing in Europe and in the Czech Republic.
  • Work with dialogue list. Written and Oral language.
  • Timing and structuring of subtitles.
  • Spatial placing of subtitles and boarders between lines, etc.
  • Applying translational universals in audiovisual translation.
  • Shortening. Dubbing vs. subtitling.
  • Basic subtitling programs.
  • The process of making personal audiovisual translation.
  • The analysis and commenting on ready audiovisual translations.
  • Making individual audiovisual translation.
