Course objectives
The seminar combines the practice of translation with theoretical linguistic analysis based on the comparison of an English text with its Czech translation. Each week students will translate a passage of text (fiction only: D. H. Lawrence, J. Joyce, J. K. Jerome, P. G. Wodehouse). Their translations will then be analyzed and compared with published translations of the text. The text analysis will be made against the theoretical linguistic background. The range of the topics dealt with will cover grammatical, semantic, pragmatic, and stylistic aspects. The seminar, designed for advanced students, will go into more specialist issues
Syllabus
