Course objectives
CHARACTEROLOGY is based on the Prague School's view of language as a unified system of means and ends. Main areas: Dialectics of form and meaning. Two functional domains according to Mathesius: naming + predication. Principles of Lexicology and Word Forming. Principles of Syntax Contrastive description of Czech and English. Applications: translation, stylistics, cultural analysis. Universal categories as basis of comparability. Main verbal and nominal grammatical categories. Naming Contrastive Lexicology Putting Words into Sentences
