- Course objectives
- The course focuses on reading and interpretation of selected parts of Cicero's rhetorical and philosophical texts (perhaps together with some of his theoretical works on rhetoric). The formal devices Cicero employed in order to emphasize the meaning of his texts are analyzed from the standpoint of the language used. Formal structure of a speech (gradation, shifts in meaning caused by word-order changes, rhetorical questions, ellipses and repetitions) and that of a philosophical dialogue is compared (ways of defining terms, argumentation). Attention is also paid to the views on Cicero as the man of letters and on the literary merit of his works as well as to the Roman reception of the Greek models (influence of the Stoics: Panaitios and Poseidonios above all; influence of Plato and Aristotle, reaction to Epicureanism; influence of Greek rhetoric), the socio-cultural background to Cicero's works and the ways of translating the discussed texts into Czech.
