Course objectives
Medieval Latin is a historic, cultural and linguistic phenomenon, continuing the old tradition of Latin language and literature of Classical Antiquity. The main objective of this course is to introduce advanced students of the Middle Ages to Medieval Latin language and literature. The course is divided in two parts. At the end of the course, students should be familiar with Medieval Latin morphology, syntax and vocabulary. They should also be able to translate texts of various Medieval Latin authors.
Syllabus
  • Topics and chronology of Medieval Latin studies.
  • Dictionaries and other basic tools for the study of Medieval Latin.
  • Constituent elements of Medieval Latin (Classical Latin, Vulgar Latin, Christian Latin).
  • Grammar exercises (conjunctive in main clauses, indicative and conjunctive subordinate clauses, infinitive constructions, ablative absolute, gerund, gerundive etc.).
  • Reading Medieval Latin texts.
