Course objectives
Main objectives of the course can be summarized as follows:
- to understand the text of Peter Abaelard, Planctus, and to interpret the verses read during the sessions;
- to read and analyze the metrics;
- to translate the poems with respect to the poetics of the text; texts of the Old Testament as the models for "planctus".

  • 1. Introduction - Latin poetry of medieval Europe with special regard to the 11th and 12th centuries; literary and spiritual situation
  • 2. Peter Abaelard, life and work
  • 3. Poetry of Peter Abaelard - hymns, Planctus, Carmen ad Astralabium
  • 4. Consecutive reading and interpretation of six poems of Planctus
