Course objectives
The main objectives of the course can be summarized as follows: to understand the basic features of Eastern Slavonic folklore; to learn the theory of migration, the historical school, comparative studies to learn the history of research into folklore and the main science schools (mythological, historical, theory of migration, comparative studies); to learn the history of collection of folklore; to learn the main folklore genres; to learn the specific issues of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian folklore; (using the audiovisual technique in the course)

  • Syllabus of Eastern Slavonic folklore: 1. The main representatives of Eastern Slavonic folklore studies 2. The theories of creation of folklore, the history of research into folklore and the main science schools 3. The main folklore genres 4. Byliny; their history, the main heroes, their singers, narrators, bearers 5. Historical songs, their differences from the genre of byliny 6. Folktales; genres, characteristics, collectors, individua reading of Eastern Slavonic folktales 7. Lyric songs, genres; ballads 8. Calendar songs 9. Ritual songs 10. Eastern Slavonic weddings 11. Eastern Slavonic drama 12. The specific issues of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian folklore

Assessment methods
The colloquium - written test, individual final project: the paper on folklore theme (9000 signs) with the list of used literature and an abstrakt written in one of the world languages.
