Course objectives
In this course we will deal with czech books of travels in the 19th and 20th century. In terms of the analyses of the selected works we will try to describe various development tendencies in this genre. At the end of the course student should be able to:
define main features of travel literature;
interpret primary sources of travel literature;
compare development of czech books of travels with development of world, above all european books of travels;
describe historical framework, in which czech books of travels developed;
describe similarities and differences in women´s and man´s conception of travel literature.

  • theoretical definition of the book of travels
  • book of travels to the end of 18th century
  • book of travels during Revival period (works of K. H. Mácha, J. Kollár, B. Němcová etc.)
  • book of travels in the the second half of the 19th century (works of J. Neruda, E. Holub, P. Durdík, J. V. Sládek etc.)
  • book of travels in the the first half of the 20th century (works of K. Čapek, K. Biebl, B. M. Eliášová, E. Valenta etc.)
  • book of travels in the the second half of the 20th century (works of J. Hanzelka, M. Zikmund, M. Horníček etc.)
  • contemporary book of travels (works of M. Holcová, V. Šrámek etc.), travel blogs
