- Course objectives
- This course presents an introduction to Greek archaeology and art, the major monuments of vase painting, architecture and sculpture from the 10th century BCE to the era of Alexander the Great. Besides a familiarity with the details of Greek art, the student should also obtain an introductory understanding of the methods of archaeological and art historical analysis of artifacts and works of ancient Greek art, how they develop as media and how they reflect ancient society and culture.
- Syllabus
- The course considers the art and architecture of the Greek world the 10th century BCE to the era of Alexander the Great. We will look at the sites and landscapes the Greeks built and used: their cities, sanctuaries, cemeteries, and the buildings they built, from public buildings such as temples and government buildings, to private houses. We will look at different types of Greek monuments, from grandiose sculptural groups to tiny coins and humble pots. At the same time, we will investigate the mutual influences among the functional types of Greek monuments (votive statues, funerary monuments, architectural sculpture, painted vases used in symposia, etc.) and cultural practices such as social and religious institutions, politics, myth and literature.
