Course objectives
The course investigates contemporary christologies exceeding the frames of Christian world. It is aimed at four topics: (1) the Marxist Jesus (Jesus as a revolutionist, the mythological school); (2) Jewish Jesus (the concept of the Messianic Jews); (3) transcultural Jesus (ahmadiyya and European esoteric movements); and (4) countercultural Jesus (Jesus movements, rock operas, film).
Main objectives of the course:
At the end of this course, the students should:
- be familiar with the basic factual knowledge of given marginal christologies;
- have the capacity of critical analyzing of marginal christologies in their social context;
- have the capacity of interpreting marginal christologies as a manifestation of the contemporary mythmaking;
- have the capacity of critical reflexion of marginal christologies as the "end points" in academic typologies.
Syllabus
  • (0) Introduction to the course. (1) Marxist Jesus I: Classic Marxists and their followers. (2) Marxist Jesus II: The mythological versus historical school in Soviet research of Jesus. (3) Class discussion I: Main representatives of the Marxist approach toward the figure of Jesus. (4) Jewish Jesus I: The formation and development of the Messianic Jews movement. (5) Jewish Jesus II: Messianic Jews between Christianity and Judaism. (6) Class discussion II: Paul of Tarsus in the conception of Messianic Jews. (7) Transcultural Jesus I: Nicholas Notovitch and the discovery of the „fifth gospel“. (8) Transcultural Jesus II: Jesus' burial in Shrinagar and the movement of Ahmadiyya. (9) Class discussion III: Holger Kersten and the transcultural Jesus. (10) Countercultural Jesus I: Screening of the film Jesus Christ Superstar. (11) Class discussion IV: Jesus Christ Superstar in the context of the counterculture in the 1960s. (12) Closing discussion.

Requirements for the colloquium:
(a) active participation in class discussions;
(b) written commentaries in given sources;
(c) seminar paper defenced in a class discussion.
