Course objectives
The objective of the course is to develop the ability of comprehension and explanation of political and religious problems of contemporary India. The course deals with historical, social and political causes and contexts of todays hindu nationalism and its violent manifestations.

  • The history of colonial administration in India.
  • Islam in India.
  • Relations between Hindus and Muslims in colonial India.
  • First indian nationalists (Vivekanada, Aurobindo, Ram Mohan Roj ...
  • The struggle for the independence of India.
  • Building of the modern state and indian secularism.
  • Hinduttva - basic concepts.
  • Religious violence of hindu nationalism in postcolonial India.
  • Communalism and the european approach to the nation.
  • The political system of India, main political parties.
  • Main organisation of hindu nationalism (Bharatiya Janata Party - BJP, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh - RSS, Vishva Hindu Parishad - VHP,...).

Lectures, class discussion. The assesment of the course is by "kolokvium" - discussion on a student's text during which the student demostrates his knowledge of the given issue and the ability of a creative and academic aprroach [the text requirements: 25 000 characters, bibliography, notes]
