Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to introduce the theme of morbidity and experiment in Czech literature to the students. The texts for an analysis are selected in order to provide the students with an overview of the development of the topic of morbidity in the history of Czech literature. Both prosaic and poetic artworks are to be analyzed and interpreted.

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

- articulate the most common forms of morbidity and experiment in Czech literature;
- interpret the texts obtaining the topic of morbidity;
- identify the authors connected with morbid and experimental texts;
- evaluate the aesthetic effect of this type of literature;
- think about the use of morbidity and experiment in other areas of art (painting, music, theater, film).
Syllabus
  • Introduction to the topic. Definition of morbidity and experiment.
  • Morbidity in a medieval bestiary.
  • Morbid death in the Czech baroque prose.
  • Czech decadent poetry.
  • Hell and Satanism in Czech literature.
  • Brutality, abuse and violence in Czech prose.
  • Perversity and necrophilia in Czech literature (Jan Neruda: Ty nemáš srdce!, Ladislav Klíma: Utrpení knížete Sternenhocha, poems of J. H. Krchovský).
  • Horror and morbidity in the work “Spalovač mrtvol”.
  • Czech experimental poetry.
  • Word, image, sound and motion (Petr Váša a Petr Nikl).
