The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
At the end of the course students will:
be familiar with library systems and standards problems and with advancements in technologies influencing librarianship;
have an enhanced knowledge of library as a system and catalogue as a basis of a library information system;
understand standardization problems mainly in terms of bibliographic description and library information systems;
have a basic theoretical and practical knowledge of descriptive cataloguing based on international standards which has been accepted and implemented in the Czech Republic;
be able to create catalogue records at basic level.
Syllabus
  • Advancement in technologies influencing librarianship, media, document types.
  • System, information system, library systems, basic concepts and terms.
  • Library information system, its functions, data, requirements, division into modules, generations, examples, comparison.
  • Catalogue as a basis of LIS, its functions, kinds, generations, interfaces, OPAC, trends in development, Library 2.0
  • Standardization, data consistency and backward compatibility problems, standards development, library standards.
  • Metadata, information resources description, RDF terminology, problems in description.
  • Bibliographic description, bibliographic record as a document model, record creation rules, record content and form rules, AACR2, ISBD, MARC21, UNIMARC, MARCXML, MODS, Dublin Core standards.
  • Access to bibliographic records, access points, headings, authority file, bibliographic information retrieval.
  • Functional requirements for bibliographic records, bibliographic rules revisions, trends and alternatives in document description, RDA.

Teaching methods
One 2 hour class per week and a continual work during semester, where students can choose from several kinds of activities, e.g. on-line cataloguing exercises, creating records in a library extended catalogue, writing an essey or paper in wiki pages or a journal. These activities are assigned points according to its demandingness and students are required to achieve defined number of points at the end of semester.
Assessment methods
Minimum of 400 points required at the end of classes for activities during semester, then final written examination in form of a knowledge test (60 minutes).
