Course objectives
Objectives of the course: The course provides students with a solid understanding of key concepts in lexicology and semantics. The course aims to encourage an active approach on the part of students toward the subject matter. Students successfully completing the course will be able to indentify and explain concepts which are central to the study of communication. They will be able to describe and discuss the semantic and morphological structure of lexemes. They will also have an enhanced knowledge of the semantic structure of sentences.
Syllabus
  • Description of the course: The course is taught in English. The topics covered in the course are as follows: - semantics and other linguistic disciplines
  • - seven types of meaning; componential analysis
  • - naming; sense and reference
  • - semantic meaning versus pragmatic meaning
  • - proposition, modality, deictics
  • - semantic fields and collocations, idioms
  • - predication, types of predicates
  • - sense relations: hyponymy, synonymy, antonymy, relational opposites, polysemy and homonymy
  • - grammar and the lexicon; components and the sentence
  • - case grammar; sentence types and modality
  • - word classes; morphological structure of lexemes
  • - word formation

Teaching methods
One 1.5 hour seminar, held every other week of the term.
Assessment methods
Seminar attendance is compulsory. Assessment: a paper (about 2500 words in length) plus a written test, each counting for 50 per cent of the final mark. If the student fails the essay,s/he is not allowed to sit the exam.
