Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide introduction to Byzantology and to present a brief survey of the history of Byzantine literature. Students will become familiar with the most significant Byzantine authors, they will understand the specifics and the patterns of development of the Byzantine literature and they will be able to use the information to understand Modern Greek literature better. With the use of dictionaries, students will be capable of understanding Byzantine literary texts. They will be able to understand the basics of Byzantine philology and Byzantology on the whole and they will understand the relation of the field to Modern Greek studies.

  • Periodization of Byzantine literature.
