Course objectives
The lectures will focus on study of influential Czech social, cultural and artistic magazines from the period between 1880 and 1938. The aim of the lecture cycle will be to make the students familiar with those titles that are freguently left out andsometimes almost forgotten, titles which prove gradual emancipation and growth of the cultural standard of the Czech nation in the last desades of the Austro- HUngarian Empire and during the First Republic. The students will become acquainted not only with the main artistic currents but also with the changes of lifestyle and mentality in the Czech society of that period.

  • 1) Introduction to the topic. Humoristické listy. Personality of the publisher Richard Vilímek. 2) Zlatá Praha and Světozor. Personality of the publisher Jan Otto. 3) Český svět.The magazine that might have given birth to Jára Cimrman. 4) Smích republiky or the ilision of the newly born Czechoslovakia as a sweetheart of the superpowers. 5) Salon - a review of the middle class in the 1920s. A magazine that mirrors the lifestyle change of its time. 6) Pestrý týden - an ilustrated magazine for every family. Higher standard of Czech journalism of the 1920s. and 1930s. 7) Gentleman and Eva - reviews for a modern man and a modern women, reflecting the lifestyle and social trends of the 1920s. and 1930s. 8) Měsíc and Der Monat - a unique project of a Czech-German review in the history of Czech journalism. Glamour as well as tension of the 1920s. Personality of the magazine editor Bohuslav Kilian. 9) Volné směry and Žijeme - top artistic and cultural reviews of the First Republic era. 10) Bytová kultura, Stavba and Horizont - specialized architectural reviews. The issues of housing culture and lifestyle in the Czechoslovakia during the First Republic. 11) Revolver letters and unassuming magazines for wide masses - Zub, Lucerna, Proud, Komár, Život města/Za lepším životem and Výběr. Hopes, desires and frustrations of the lower alasses of the Czech society during the First Republic. 12) The phenomenon of Rodokaps - pulp fictions and magazines of the 1930s. and 1940s. A crusade against pulp fiction from the end of the First Republic to the 1950s.
