Course objectives
The main aim of this course is to present basic information about the field of Mediterranean Studies. At the end of the course, students should be able to: define the Mediterranean region from both geographical and historical points of view; enumerate and characterize different branches of science focused on the Mediterranean region and Mediterranean cultures; know the basic handbooks (especially vocabularies and encyclopedias), monographs and scholarly serials presenting the outcomes of reasearch in the field; use the methodogical propedeutics for proper reading and writing scholarly texts (rules of citation, differences between the genres of scholarly writting).

  • 3-4.Geographical, Historical and Cultural Definition of the Region (Western and Eastern Mediterranean region, North Africa)

  • 7-8. History: Middle Ages
  • 9-10. Modern History
  • 11-12. Encyclopedias, vocabularies, scholarly serials, monographs; catalogues and databases; analysis of the scholarly text (genre, style, language.

Teaching methods
The course is realized as lectures, lectures are accompanied by an online course in the ELF. Students should not only get some basic geographic and cultural-historic knowledge about the Mediterranean region, necessary for their further studies, but also to get skills in composition of the elementary scientific written forms. A written review about any scholarly book or paper handed over during the semester is required.
Assessment methods
1. written test aimed at testing the student’s insight into the notions explained during lectures, minimum pass level 70%
2. submission of a review
3. publication of one contribution and a comment in the "News Database" (see ELF)
4. six online tests in the ELF
