Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide a survey of liguistic terminology sufficient for students of philology lacking any theoretical linguistic knowledge. It is also an introduction to diachronic and comparative linguistics. At the end of the course the students should be familiar with the main linguistic terminology and should be able to explain them in wider contexts and to applicate this knowledge in the study of ancient languages - Latin and Greek.   • 1. synchronic linguistics; 2. sign quality and systematic nature of language; 3. phonetics and phonology; 4. morphology, grammatical categories; 5. syntax; 6. lexicology and semantics; 7. phraseology, stylistics; 8. languages of the world; 9. language typology, IE branch of languages; 10. phonological development and sound rules; 11. IE word stem, development of nominal and verbal inflections; 12. semantic changes, development of the lexical system; 13. etymology.
