Course objectives
Introduction to Historical sources provides a comprehensive overview of Czech narrative sources from the oldest period up to the 15th century. Interpretation of individual sources is preceded by general typology of the narrative sources. Legends are analyzed within the traditional cycles (mission of Cyril and Method, legends connected with lives of Wenceslas and Ludmila, Adalbert of Prague, Procopius of Sazava, Hroznata and Agnes of Bohemia). Their vitae are examined as well. Chronicles and annals are presented in chronological order: Cosmas' chronicle and historiography of the 12th century, 13th-century historiography, Dalimil and the chronicle of Zbraslav, historiography of the period of Charles IV., Hussite historiography.
