- Course objectives
- The course provides students with the survey of normative grammar of the Attic Greek dialect of the Classical period. At the end of the course students should be able to explain grammatical rules and paradigms studied during the course; recognize grammatical categories of the morphological forms studied during the course; apply grammatical rules to translate concrete sentences and easy texts; translate simple sentences into Greek; analyze sentences.
- Syllabus
- 1. Characteristics of Ancient Greek, the alphabet.
- 2. Phonetics and phonology (including prosody: accent, intonation), grammatical structure of the Ancient Greek.
- 3. Declension of the o-stems, active and mediopassive present - indicative, infinitive and imperative.
- 4. Construction of A+I; atributive and predicative position of the constituents of a sentence.
- 5. Declension of the a-stems; adjectives of the 1st and 2nd declension; active and mediopassive imperfect; irreal conditional mood and wish clauses with verbs in the imperfective form; substantivized infinitive.
- 6. Declension of the a-stems - masculine; deponentia; accusativus respectus.
- 7. Mediopassive present participle; construction of the participium absolutum.
- 8. Mediopassive imperfect; formation of adverbs; construction of N+I, participium coniunctum.
- 9. Asigmatic aorist of verbs - active and mediopassive, indicative, imperative and infinitive; irreal conditional clauses with perfective verbs.
- 10. Sigmatic aorist - active and mediopassive, indicative, imperative and infinitive; relative pronouns.
- 11. Sigmatic future system of verbs of vocalic or explosive consonantal stems; final clauses with future participle.
- 12. Personal, possessive and demonstrative pronouns; regular comparison of adjectives and adverbs; construction of A+participle.
- 13. Declension of the consonantal explosive stems.

- Teaching methods
- Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of lectures, reading Greek, excercises and drills during the lessons, homework.
- Assessment methods
- During the semester it is obligatory to do homework-tests in e-learning course. Credits are given at the end of the semester after the passing of the final written test which consists of translating a text from Greek to Czech, translating simple sentences from Czech to Greek, identifying and translating verb and noun forms.
