Course objectives
Main aims of the lecture are: 1) more information on topics dealt with in CJA003, especially,
2) application of theoretical knowledge when reconstructing Proto-Slavonic forms,
3) elementary orientation in scholarly sources relating to Slavonic studies.
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students will be able:
- to explain processes in language that led to the origin of Proto-Slavonic after the split of the Indo-European proto-language,
- to classify contemporary Slavonic languages on both diachronic (historically-comparative) and synchronic (typological, areal or sociolinguistic) bases,
- to describe historical circumstances of the origin of the first Slavonic language,
- to explain the origin and development of Slavonic systems of script.

  • 3. Slavonic languages and their stratification
  • 4. Slavonic script
  • 5. From Proto-Indo European language to Proto-Slavonic
  • 6. “Satem” and “kentum” types of languages
  • 7. Baltic-Slavonic language unit
  • 8. Proto-Slavonic (with the focus on phonology)
  • 9. Dialectal differentiation of Proto-Slavonic
