Course objectives
The aim of the course is to clarify basic theoretical concepts and methods of linguistics, with an emphasis on functionally structural linguistics and cognitive linguistics. The course is a concise introduction into basic terms and methodology of general linguistics.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course the student is able to:
- describe specifics of linguistics as a scientific endevour;
- situate a linguistic sign into the context of semiotics;
- characterise various theoretical approaches to linguistic communication;
- explain features of prominent linguistic currents and personalities of the 20th century;
- demonstrate a linguistic analysis on a simple text in Czech;
- apply his/her knowledge to work with texts in other languages (especially Japanese).

Teaching methods
Lectures, individual work with texts.
Assessment methods
Final evaluation consists of results of one mid-term test and one final test. Both test have written form, combining multiple choices and free answers. Attendance of at least 70% is required and checked by signing the attendance sheet.
