Course objectives
The goal is to acquire the knowledge of the main concepts, frameworks and philosophers within philosophy of language, where philosophy of language is understood as the study of relations between language and though and/or the outside world. We will focus primarily on topics relevant to current thinking.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- identify and summarise important features within philosophy of language;
- write an essay on a selected topic within the philosophy of language;
- explain fundamental notions in philosophy of language.
Syllabus
  • We will read the following texts: 1. On Sense and Reference (G. Frege); 2. On Denoting (B. Russell); 3. The Two Dogmas of Empiricism (W.V.O. Quine); 4. Performative Utterances (J. Austin); 5. What is a Speech Act? (J. Searle); 6. Metaphors we Live By (G. Lakoff and M. Johnson).

Class discussion of the assigned readings.
Assessment methods
active participation = 20%, class presentation = 20%, final essay = 60%
