- Course objectives
- Students become familiar with the ancient civilizations´ history of state and law (Mesopotamia, Egypt, Ancient Greece and Rome).
Students will be able to interpret precepts of law in the context of their enactment and later significance (the question of law reception). - Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students will:
- orientate themselves in the ancient legal sources;
- be able to interpret them thoroughly;
- be able to describe the specifics of ancient legal life. - Syllabus
- Ancient law and civilization terms, the question of state and law periodization, methodologies applied in the interpretation of legal and narrative sources.
- Myths, legends and their relationship to law. Arts and law.
- States and their law codes. Social organization. Formal and material legal sources. Legal texts. Legislators.
- Comparative reading and interpretation of legal texts - representatives of state, state institutions .
- Comparative reading and interpretation of legal texts - civil law.
- Comparative reading and interpretation of legal texts - family law.
- Comparative reading and interpretation of legal texts - remedial law and forensic system.
