Course objectives
This course is intended for the beginner students of Theory of Interactive Media studies. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with some of the main themes, theoreticians and artists in the field of new media art, and to give them an initial insight into the discipline. Students will be oriented in the local contemporary artistic happenings within the given field of study (galleries, festivals) and familiarized with key institutions, festivals and personalities of the theory and practice of new media art in the Czech Republic and abroad.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be:
- capable of recognizing relevant resources suited to the art of interactive media research;
- familiarized with some of the key themes, theoreticians and artists in the field of Theory of Interactive Media;
- able to prepare a report about an exhibition and its interpretation; they will be able to present their outcomes during the lectures;
- oriented in the local contemporary art within the field of study (galleries, festivals);
- familiarized with key institutions and festivals in new media art theory and practice in the Czech Republic and abroad.
Syllabus
  • - Course target - organization of the semester - assignment of tasks to individual seminars.
  • - Relevant resources - why Wikipedia is not enough. Source Wizard (libraries, e-resources, etc.). - Monoscope, UbuWeb, runme.org, mediaartnet, university electronic resources (JSTORE, etc.).
  • - Current events – new media artists and theorists.
  • - Visit to a new media institution, archive, or festival.
  • - Discussion about current events in new media: current exhibitions and conferences (ZKM, Transmediale, Ars Electronica and local events). New publications and texts by prominent new media theorists.
  • - Festivals, institutions, archives focused on media art – locally and abroad. History and Present.
  • - New media theorists: theorist and their institution of activity (Manovich, Huhtamo, McLuhan, Flusser, M. Fuller, O. Grau, F. Kittler, F. Cramer ...).
  • - Discussion about a visited new media institution, archive or festival.
  • - New media artists: Life and Works of Selected Artists.
  • - Visit to a new media institution, archive, or festival.
  • - Credit Week.

Teaching methods
- Lectures about relevant resources suited to research the art of interactive media.
- Discussions on selected topics from the field of study and debates on the current happening in contemporary new media theory and practice (personalities, institutions).
- Visits to cultural institutions, archives, conferences or festivals and subsequent outcomes from these activities.
Assessment methods
To obtain the credits, the students are asked for:
- Active participation at selected exhibitions, events.
- Active participation in the seminar during discussions about visited exhibitions or current events within the field of study. Outputs of students in the form of reports and interpretations of exhibitions in the classroom.
- All discovered information regarding new texts, artists, works of art and festivals from the field new media will be collected in a shared document that will be a common outcome of this course.
- Meeting attendance conditions (75%).
