Course objectives
The Ph.D. seminar (alongside with other Ph.D. seminars) is a key theoretical course of the Ph.D. study programme in Czech language. It is a place, where departmental teachers, visiting professors and Ph.D. students of similar theoretical orientation meet, discussing specific linguistic issues. Ph.D. students get thus acquainted with findings of present-day linguistics, improving their knowledge and competences, such as presenting results of their research in front of the scholarly audience, defending their opinions in a scholarly discussion or critically interpreting scholarly sources (mostly written in foreign languages).
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students will be able:
a) to analyze scholarly sources critically,
b) to identify an object of linguistic analysis and to apply an adequate methodology for the purpose of its analysis,
c) to present results of their research,
d) to participate in scholarly discussions,
e) to defend their opoinions in discussions.
Syllabus
  • Teaching is organized in groups of Ph.D. students, corresponding with key areas of research at the Department of Czech Language: 1. synchronic linguistics, 2. diachronic linguistics, 3. corpus and computer linguistics. Various topics discussed in seminars depend on the specialization of the individual students, on current research tasks of teachers participating in the seminar and on topic of lectures of the invited guests.

  • Literatura pro doktorský seminář je předepsána individuálně.
Teaching methods
Reading scholarly sources (mostly written in foreign languages), presentations, discussions.
Assessment methods
Requirements for gaining credits are specified by supervisors of the individual groups of Ph.D. students.
