Course objectives
Seminar of Creative Writing on Documentary Film is an opportunity for students of film studies, journalism and other humanities and social disciplines to train their skills in the reflection on films and festival events under the guidance of well-known reviewers and theoreticians during the Ji.hlava IDFF.
What are the possibilites of writing about documentary film within different genres? What are the barriers and advantages of the particular genres for a dialogue with documentary film? What are the conventions and the possibilities of these genres?
The course consists of three blocks:
1.1. Lectures of the Czech leading journalists - they present students with different forms of critical reflection, pitfalls and advantages of individual genres, the material being a documentary film or a film festival.
1.2. Lectures of foreign lecturers open up broader topic of media reflection of documentary film.
2. Independent student work - each chooses one genre and prepares their paper within three days.
3. Critical seminars with individual lecturers - in-depth analysis of written paper.
Learning outcomes
After finishing this course, students will have been able to:
Understand the issues of documentary cinematography.
Understand the problems of writing about documentary film in different genres and styles.
Write a critical reflection of a documentary film.
Analyze critical discourse.

  • All lectures take place at the Ji.hlava IDFF from 27th October to 30th October, 2021.

Teaching methods
Theoretical lectures, critical seminars, independent work, discussion.
Courses are carried out within the Ji.hlava IDFF.
The festival provides seminar participants with low-cost accommodation and a free PRESS accreditation throughout the festival.
Assessment methods
Terms of evaluation:
1. Participation in all lectures is obligatory.
2. Passing the critical seminar with a lecturer.
3. Written assignement: paper on selected genre; the optimal range for each paper is determined by the lecturer - typically 9,000 characters.
Students will rewrite their paper based on a consultation within the critical seminar and will send it to their lecturer by 12.11.2021
