Course objectives
The lecture course focuses on an interpretation of selected problems of medieval European history. The selected themes capture the crucial events, which influenced the relationship between Western and Eastern Europe. The aim is not to remind the events of political, religious, ecclesiastical and cultural history, but to show their perception by the representatives of both parts of Europe and the consequences for further developments. The concept of the lecture allows a plastic interpretation of the chosen problem and facilitates the understanding of the events that are often present in a tendentious and distorted way.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the students will be able to:
- analyse the consequences of the division of the Roman Empire into two parts and the fall of the Western Roman Empire
– define the causes of the rise of the influence of the Pope in Rome, its consequences for the development of Christian Europe
- describe the role of monasteries in medieval Europe
– analyse the consequences of Slavic expansion into Europe
– define the causes of the so-called Great Schism and its consequences
– explain the consequences of the Crusades for the development of medieval Europe
- analyze the causes of the failures of the discussions for church union
