Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the key events in the historical development of monastic institutions in the Czech lands in the context of religious changes in the Middle Ages and early modern period.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- describe the fundamental directions of development of monastic institutions against the backdrop of the history of European society;
- identify the types of monastic institutions;
- specify the peculiarities of the historical development of monasteries in the Czech lands;
- define historical changes in relations between monastic institutions and the society around them;
- identify the roles of monastic institutions in the historical context.
Syllabus
  • 1. The medieval beginnings of religious orders in the Czech lands - the early Benedictine foundation in the Czech state;
  • 2. The preeminent period of Cistercian and Premonstratensian monasteries in the context of the Investiture Controversy;
  • 3. The beginnings of the Mendicant movement in the Czech lands as a sign of new spiritual currents in Europe;
  • 4. The Hussite movement and its consequences for church orders, differences in development between Bohemia and Moravia;
  • 5. Monasteries during the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation;
  • 6. The development of religious institutions in the time of re-Catholicization, its features and causes;
  • 7. Enlightenment absolutism and its effects on the milieu of Czech and Moravian monasteries.
