- Course objectives
- The course aims to line up an overview of the history of Czech cinema before 1950s. In five basic periods (cinema before 1918, silent cinema of the 1920s,1930s, Protectorate, cinema before ca. 1956). In each period we will place cinematography into political (organization of state administration and applicable regulations) and a wider cultural context (writing about film and public perception). In more detail, we will deal with film production, distribution and film introduction.
- Learning outcomes
- After finishing this course, students will:
gain basic knowledge of Czech cinema history before the half of 1950s;
understand the significance of pre-war local cinematography in broader social context;
understand Czech cinematography as a complex social phenomenon, not only as a sequence of aesthetically exceptional films;
understand relationship between production, distribution and film introduction;
broaden their existing knwoledge with less-featured films. - Syllabus
