Course objectives
The aim of the lectures is to explain students the development of Greek architecture from the Late Bronze Age to the end of the Hellenistic Period. The course will provide information on the individual construction forms typical for Greek architecture as well as define the fundamental terminology. The lectures geographically cover Greece itself, Greek islands, Asia Minor, southern Italy and Sicily.
Learning outcomes
After successfull passing the course, students will be able to:
Describe the main chronological development of the Greek architecture
Recognize and describe fundamental ancient Greek architectural orders
Explain and use of the basic terminology
Determine typical architectural form of the Greek buildings, their spatial distribution and chronological framework

  • Temples 2: Magna Graecia temples – The Archaic Period
  • Temples 3: Asia Minor and Greek islands – The Early and Archaic Period
  • Temples 4: The Early Classical Period
  • Temples 5: The Classical and Hellenistic Period
  • Tholoi – circular buildings
  • Greek theatres: terminology, architectural development
  • Public buildings 1: stoa
  • Public buildings 2: búleuterion and prytaneion
