Course objectives
This course aims to consolidate language skills at B2 level of the CEFR, with a special emphasis on spoken and written argumentation and the methodology of literary text analysis (“commentaire composé”) and of oral presentation (“exposé”). One half of the seminar will be devoted to the acquisition of methodological skills, through the detailed study of a series of literary excerpts of various genres; the other half will be devoted to further deepening of language skills, through the study of authentic documents (written and spoken press, audiovisual resources, …). Students will directly apply what they learn in a multi-step project which aims to foster a nuanced reflection on the ways and the meaning of reading in the contemporary world.
Learning outcomes
Output level of language according to CEFR: B2 At the end of this course, students should be able to: read and understand literary texts of different genres, and write an analysis of a literary excerpt (“commentaire composé”); present an oral presentation and write argumentative essays on a range of contemporary topics; understand medium-long audio(visual) documents in spoken standard French; engage and maintain a conversation in standard French on a wide range of topics.
