Course objectives
The course aims to introduce students to the main lines of Czech-Slovak and Western thought on translation (Friedrich Schleiermacher, Jean-Paul Vinay - Jean Darbelnet, Roman Jacobson, Eugene Nida, Georges Mounin, Jiří Levý, Danica Seleskovitch, Marianne Lederer, Katharina Reiss, Hans Vermeer, Christiane Nord, Itamar Even-Zohar, Gideon Toury, A. Pym, L. Venuti and others) and to acquaint them with the current lines of translatological research.
Learning outcomes
Students will gain an overview of the main lines of thought on translation in Western translatology, especially from the mid-20th century to the present, as well as insight into current research and methodology in the field of translatology.
Syllabus
The course syllabus focuses on the constitution of translatology as a independent discipline and an overview of key theories. Contemporary theoretical and methodological perspectives from various linguistic fields complement and extend the knowledge base.

Teaching methods
Teaching takes the form of guided discussion seminars. Before each meeting, students will read the assigned texts and prepare to discuss them.
Assessment methods
The course ends with a written test that verifies the acquired theoretical knowledge and knowledge of the compulsory readings. The pass mark is 60%.
