- Abstract
- The course introduces students to the history of European music during the 'long 19th century' (ca. 1790–1914). It focuses on the transformations in musical thinking and stylistic development, key composer figures, musical thinking and aesthetic ideas, the social structures of musical life, and the history of musical reception.
- Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, the student:
contextualises and dates key works, composers, genres, and institutions of European and Czech music (1790–1914) within a chronological and geographical framework
independently analyses form, harmony, texture, and the relationship between music and text/program in specific works, and identifies heard compositions based on stylistic features
critically evaluates periodisation and stylistic categories ('Romanticism', 'canon', 'late style') as historically conditioned constructs rather than neutral facts
explains the relationship between musical creation and the institutional, gender, national, and media transformations of the era
works with primary sources and academic literature, cites according to standard guidelines, and formulates independent written analytical arguments
orally presents and defends their own analytical perspective in academic discussion
