- Course objectives
- The course is based on eighteen months of experience with translating the Pulitzer Prize-winning Fin-de-Siecle Vienna: Politics and Culture by Carl E. Schorske, professor of cultural history at Princeton University. This publication, considered in the West a landmark in the thinking about the turn-of-the-century Austrian politics, science and culture, deals with the changes of liberal concepts of the world in literature (Hofmannstahl, Saar, Stifter), explains the collapse of liberal values under the pressure of the new kind of politics (two anti-Semitists - Schoenerer, Lueger; and the Zionist leader, Herzl), describes the development of Austrian architecture (O. Wagner and C. Sitte), analyses the whole artistic pilgrimage of Gustav Klimt, explores the influence of politics on the origin of psychoanalysis (Freud's Interpretation of Dreams) and, finally, depicts the new approach to the world as presented by expressionism (O. Kokoschka in painting and literature, and A. Schoenberg in music). For each seminar, translation of a portion of the text will be assigned. The discussion will then include compari-sons of the versions presented by students, factual and stylistic problems of the text (which the translator had the opportunity to sort out with the author himself) and also the German and French translations of the book.
