Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to faciliate the student's ability of reading and translating Caesar's Commentarii de bello Gallico (Book 1 and 6) and to help them with the first-year-exam (move-on exam) preparation. The particular aims of the course are as follows: to understand and adequately translate the text; to explain the grammar (in correspondence to the course "Latin Grammar I and II").
Syllabus
  • 1.-2. Gramatical analysis of Caesar's text.
  • 3.-4. Caesar's most used grammatical constructions: ablativus absolutus, accusativus cum infinitivo, temporal sentences, indirect speech etc.
  • 5.-8. Practice of adequate translation of the Latin original text. (Stress on the differences between Latin syntactic constructions and the Czech modern ekvivalents.)
  • 9.-10. Comparation of the Latin original text and existing Czech translations.
  • 11.-12. Intuitive translation of yet unknown syntactical constructions.
  • 13. Interpretation of the cultural-historical background.
