Course objectives
This course will be devoted to journalistic works by Karel Čapek that were written between 1917-1938. His journalistic works will be presented in the whole context of his career. The course will be divided into several thematic parts. First of all we will focus on Čapek‘s career in journalism (newspapers and magazines he worked for, his attitude to journalism etc.). Afterwards we will be interested in details in those genres, which were the most typical for Čapek (column, sloupek, entrefilet). We will base our study on collections of works Kalendář, Věci kolem nás, Sloupkový ambit, Zahradníkův rok, Měl jsem psa a kočku, V zajetí slov, Místo pro Jonathana!, Anglické listy, Italské listy, Výlet do Španěl, Cesta na sever and we will classify Čapek’s works into several main thematic cycles – political articles, works about nature, literature etc. We will also try to define the place of his journalistic works in the whole context of his works and analyse the impact of journalism on his works. At the end of this course students should be able to specify the main features of Čapek’s journalistic style, show them on particular examples, present main topics of his works, characterize changes in his journalistic works and integrate this part of his aktivity to the broader context of his literary production.
