Course objectives
Main objectives can be summarized as follows: The purpose of the course is to acquaint students of literary fields with the best examples of Russian short stories of the 20th century. First of all the seminar will be focused on the analysis, interpretation and comparison of selected works of Russian authors. At the end of this course, students should be able to understand brief information about writers’ lives, works and about the literary process of the appropriate period.

  • Introduction to the Russian short story tradition of the 20th century. Literary analysis of separate stories by Isaac Babel, Mikhail Bulgakov, Mikhail Zoshchenko, Andrei Platonov, Vladimir Nabokov, Emmanuil Kazakevich, Varlam Shalamov, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Georgi Vladimov, Yury Trifonov, Vasily Shukshin, Valentin Rasputin, Chinghiz Aitmatov etc.
