Course objectives
The course objective is to give students an insight into issues relating to earth buildings in connection with the occurrence of that material in the Czech Lands and in the Central European context. Lectures will span the entire range from rudimentary earth structures (dugouts) to advanced above-ground types of earth buildings. The course also includes a field trip to the care for historical monuments sites in central and southern Moravia.
Syllabus
  • Cycle of lectures about earth - one of the traditional construction materials.
  • Evolution of the earth building and its geographical coverage in the area of the Czech Republic.
  • Building techniques of the earth architecture and its change.
  • Popular architecture under the influence of social and economic changes in 19th and 20th centuries.
  • Questions of preservation of the earth architecture and its documentation.
  • Earth as the additional and main construction material, techniques of its manufacturing.
