Course objectives
The aim of the course is to be well informed about the development of the Roman state, its culture, lifestyle and institutions; to be able to compare the development of ancient Greece and Rome; to judge the significance of their heritage for the contemporary world.
The content of the course is centered on the Roman history from the Archaic Period to the transition period between the Classical Age and the Middle Ages with space devoted to discussing the importance of the Great Migration Period for the Roman and European history.
Syllabus
  • 1) Etruscan civilization, Carthage, Greeks in the West and the Romans as the creators of the civilization of Antiquity in the West Mediterranean.
  • 2) The origins of Rome.
  • 3) The Archaic Period of Roman history, its development and society.
  • 4) The political organization of the Roman Republic.
  • 5) The aristocracy and the commoners -- the struggle for the civil rights.
  • 6) The wars of the Roman Republic, the provinces.
  • 7) Crisis of the Republic.
  • 8) The beginnigs and the development of the Principate.
  • 9) The lifestyle and the culture during the zenith of the Principate.
  • 10) The crisis of the Empire, its causes.
  • 11) The institutions and the society during the era of Absolutism.
  • 12)The Roman state and the Christianity.
  • 13) Roman Empire and the Great Migration. The heritage of the Antiquity and the barbarians.
