Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The course offers an introductory survey of nations and extinct or old languages in Asia along the Silk Road. The lectures contain sketches of the history of important countries and examples of abundant cross-cultural exchanges. At the end of this course, students should be able to learn the relations of important civilizations along the Silk Road.
Syllabus
  • 1. Concept of the Silk Road and main centres of Asian populations; 2. Greeks, Bactrians, Romans and Parthians - their languages, settlements and notes of old geographers; 3. Chinese language, empire and political influences from the time of the Han dynasty; 4. The Huns (Xiongnu) and Proto-Turkic clans; 5. Influences of Indian languages and Iranian civilisations; 6. Old-Turkic language and empires of the Turkic nations till the 12th century; 7. Rise and formation of Mongolian nations and Classical Mongolian; 8. Context of divergence of contemporary Turkic languages; 9. Languages of small nations (Tokharian, Uralic, Fenno-Ugric); 10. Scripts and languages of civilizations on the fringe of Silk Road (Tibetan, Tungusic, Semitic)
