Course objectives

The aim of the lecture is to make students acquainted with the history of art collecting in Central Europe from 17th to 20th centuries.

Syllabus

The main topics of the lecture:
1. Origins of the early modern collecting – from the manyristic “Kunstkammer und Wunderkammer” to the specialized art collections.
2. The socio-cultural prerequisites of the art collecting, patronage and art trade.
3. Selected royal and aristocratic collections of the 17th and 18th centuries (e.g. collections of the King Charles I, of the Austrian archduke Leopold Wilhelm, of the Princes of Liechtenstein, of the Saxony Palatines in Dresden, of the Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm in Düsseldorf, of the Counts Schönborns in Pommersfelden and Vienna, of the Duke Anton Ulrich in Brunswick, of the bishop Karl of Liechtenstein-Castelcorn in Olomouc).
4. Foundation of Public Collections at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries (case of the Picture Gallery of the Society of Patriotic Friends of Art in Prague).
5. Character of the 19th and 20th centuries art collections in Czech Lands – examples: the Picture Cabinet of Dr. Josef K. Hoser (Vienna and Prague), Collections of the baron Adalbert Lanna (Prague), of the Baron Heinrich Liebig (Liberec), Heinrich Gomperz (Brno) and others.
6. Collecting of the contemporary and modern art – examples: the Collections of Art Historian Vincenc Kramář (Prague), Professor Otakar Teyschl (Brno) and others.
