Course objectives
This course provides a detailed discussion and application of Czechoslovak cinema before 1945 in its socio-cultural contexts with an emphasis on advocacy of an idea that film is a medium with cultural function. We will point out initial debate about entertainment (commercial) and culturally-educational features of cinema and we will focus on ways in which the idea of cinemas` cultural function fulfiled on the level of production and how was it interpreted and shaped by film censorship. We will highlight also the tradition of film cultural screenings.
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to describe and understand circumstances of first concepts of film achive, film museum, film school and film festivals in the Czech context.
