Course objectives
At the end of the course student should be able to distinguish key types of gallery institutions and characterise their specific features; s/he should know exhibition institutions in Brno and place them within the above mentioned typology; s/he should also be able to evaluate roles of other subjects that participate in the art world – i.e. art collectors, some foundations and Public Benefit Organisations; s/he will know the possibilities of mediating and promoting of art; s/he will understand how professional and educational institutions influence the art world system. At the end of the course student will be able to describe and evaluate curator’s position and competencies and will know the most influential curators of both the Czech and global art scene; s/he will know contemporary journal of art criticism and will be able to identify specific features of art criticism as genre. Students will be able to articulate a conception of their own curatorial project, including additional program; s/he will be able to write an exhibition review.
Syllabus
  • 1. Institutional frameworks of the art world. Various types of gallery institutions: museums of art (institutions that collect and preserve art), “Kunsthalle” galleries, private galleries, independent galleries.
  • 2. A structure of art museums and galleries in the Czech Republic after 1989 (with a special focus on Brno region). The art collectors. Roles within gallery institutions: directors, curators, gallery educators. Civil Society Organizations, Foundations and Public Benefit Organisations and their role in collecting and promoting of contemporary art.
  • 3. Curators and developments of definitions of their role and competencies. Curators specialists – curatorial studies.
  • 4. Curators as artists; artists as curators.
  • 5. Art criticism, its role within the art world, traditions, and actual state. Art criticism in the Czech Republic after 1989 – important journals and influential art critics.
  • 6. Art at universities in the Czech Republic. How is art socialized (on the role of media and internet). Art fairs, art competitions and prizes as yet another forms of presenting, promoting and reflecting art.

Teaching methods
The course will consist of lectures and practical drills (writing critical texts and their analysis), visits in gallery insitutions in Brno, and presentation by proffesional curators.
Assessment methods
Fulfilling requirements: written test, and individual project (either (a) review of one of the exhibitions that will be due on during the actual semester, or (b) a proposal of curatorial project). Lectures attendance is not required for awarding credit.
