- Course objectives
- The Chronicon Aulae regiae is the most extensive, most important and most advanced chronicle of medieval Latin literature in Bohemia. At the end of the course, students should be able to evaluate the state of research on the Chronicon; to characterize its language and style; to discuss the ways of translation of the leonin hexametre into Czech; to analyze rhetorical phenomena and cursus of a selected piece of the work; to create a commented translation of a part of the text into Czech.
- Syllabus
- 1. State of research.
- 2. Origin of the chronicle and its authors.
- 3. Structure of the chronicle: prologues, structure, prosimetre.
- 4. Characteristics of the genre: chronicle as a genre and minor genres involved in it (vision, letter, speech, prayer, planctus, epitaph, literary testament, vita, miracula).
- 5. Rhetorical phenomena used in the chronicle and other features of its style (figures of speech, tropes, loci communes, cursus etc.).
- 6. Literary context of the chronicle.
- 7. Translation of the leonin hexametre.
- 8. Reading and interpretation of the following passages: prologues, I/88-115.
