Course objectives
These lectures are devoted to literature of the era of National revival and literature of the second half of the 19th century. It is an elementary course which introduces the first century of modern Czech literature with regards to its position in European (including Czech) history and culture and with regards to its immanent character. Regular attention is devoted to present comments on these issues. Correlation between encyclopedic knowledge and interpretations of literary works is emphasized.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- understand specific features of the Czech literature of 19th century;
- to use its genre system;
- to compare it with the model of the modern literature.
Syllabus
  • dr. Urválková: This part of lecture will be devoted to crucial issues of Czech literature during the Revival period, which will be illustrated through the use of relevant period literary works. We will focus on the main features and specifics of Czech literature during Revival period against a background of Europian literary development; further on its periodization, its functions as well as on the issue of literary-historic syntheses. We will also deal with syncretism of period styles and tendencies (Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism, Biedermeier and Realism); definition of this term (syncretism) will be based on analyses of particular literary works. In the lecture other issues, such as formation of “Revival myths”, stereotypes, autostereotypes and their importance in the culture of the 19th century, will be also mentioned.
  • doc. Kudrnáč: The course is devoted to the work of the leading authors of the Máj, Ruch and Lumír schools and to their contemporaries; attention is also focused on their reception by the critics of that time, their interpretation by literary historians and on their relation to foreign literatures. The lecture deals mainly with J. Neruda, V. Hálek, K. Světlá, J. Arbes, J. Vrchlický, S. Čech, A. Jirásek, Z. Winter, J. V. Sládek, J. Zeyer and T. Nováková.
